Robert R. Martin, 85, of Brookfield, loving husband of 62 years to Helen (Gardner) Martin, died Tuesday, August 14th at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, New Milford. Robert was born on September 22, 1926 in Yonkers, NY, son of the late Robert W. and Harriet (Donaldson) Martin.
Robert attended Saunders Trade School, Yonkers, NY. He served in the US Army from November 1944 to June 1947 as a lineman and truck driver while stationed in Germany with the 9th Signal Company.
Robert married Helen Gardner, October 29, 1949 and they resided in Peekskill, NY for 45 years. He volunteered as a fireman with Cordlandt Hook and Ladder, an ambulance driver for Peekskill Ambulance Corp and served with the Peekskill Fire Police.
Robert worked for New York Plumbers Specialty Co. in White Plains, NY and Westchester County, NY, retiring in 1990. He and his wife moved to Brookfield in 2005. Robert was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church in Brookfield. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Robert played the harmonica and enjoyed fishing, boating on the Hudson River, photography and trips to Colorado, Cape Cod and Maine.
The family would like say a special "Thank You" to the staff at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center for the care of Robert.
In addition to his wife Helen, Robert will be missed by his two daughters, Barbara Bond and her husband Larry of CO and Joan Fiore and her husband Guy of Brookfield; three grandchildren, Kevin, Angela and Joseph Fiore; one sister, Isabel Tagliabue as well as his niece and nephew.
A Memorial Service will be held at Valley Presbyterian Church, 21 Whisconier Rd., Brookfield at 1 PM on Saturday, August 18th.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association and the Alzheimer's Association, New Milford, CT.
